Sleep disorders: evolution in a basic health area of Oviedo (Spain).

Aim: To determine the profile and evolution of sleep/wake cycle disorders in the general population over 44 years of age, and the consumption of hypnotic drugs.

Method: A two phases cross-sectional study was carried out in a random sample of the general population over 44 years of age. A total of 235 people were assessed using the General Health Questionnaire, the Mini Mental State and the Oviedo Sleep Disorders Questionnaire.

Results: The first phase prevalence rates were as follows: sleep disorders 35,8%, insomnia 25,7% and hypnotic consumption 15,7%. Those of the second phase were 36,1%, 32,6% and 18,9% respectevely. In the first phase those over 65 years of age the prevalence of sleep disorders (39,4%) was significantly greater than in those between 45-64 years (19,5%). In the two phases females presented a greater prevalence (44,4%, 46,1%) than males (21,8%, 19,8%).

Conclusions: Sleep disorders are highly prevalent and chronic in the population under study. These disorders are associated with the elderly and females. A considerable percentage of this population are long-term hypnotics consumers
