Our brain could be considered a large dynamic system with different well balanced subsystems. Neurobiological and psychosocial stimulus can disturb this equilibrium. In normal subjects, these are transitory changes that the our fine tuned automatic internal control can, sooner o later, balance. But if the stimulus have enough amplitude, specificity and duration, then the interaction among the subsystems can be modified in a way that an abnormal local subsystem state became an stable autonomous structure. This autonomous structure can survive during long periods of time independently of new external or internal conditions. Even more, the functioning and interactions of the whole system can progress to a permanent integration of the abnormal structure.

This kind of behavior have been recognized in many complex physical systems, as for example, those involved in whether forecast. It has been explained through theoretical models derived from non-linear dynamic system theory. Under this unified approach, the article examines different neurobiological and psychosocial therapies and propose a paradigm for the explanation of their working principles.
